Giulio Cocchi Spumanti grew out of
the enthusiasm of a young Florentine confectioner who established his own business in Asti
in 1891 and expanded his activities from liquorista (Liqueur distiller), as they
used to call it then, to spumantista (sparkling wine maker). In particular he used
to flavour wines with aromatic herbs according to his own exclusive and personal recipes.
This is how Giulio Cocchi began his own production of special aromatized wines. By the
turn of the century two recipes in particular, Barolo Chinato and the Aperitivo Americano,
were already famous.
A decisive factor in the eventual success of these products was to open shops where the
public could taste and buy them. By 1913 there were already five such shops in Piedmont.
The name Cocchi quickly spread far and wide; Cocchi products were exported to New York, to
the ltalian colonies in Africa, and even to Venezuela, where Giulio Cocchi's son founded
the "Casa Cocchi of Venezuela". The Cocchi company has kept its
"hand-crafted" character with its expert production of sparkling wines by the
prestigious Metodo Classico method, monovarietal sparkling wines by the Charmat method,
and the famous DOCG Asti. The original cellars in the town of Asti are used for long
ageing. Paying homage to tradition, production continues of small quantities of those
aromatised wines and special liqueurs that made the company famous. The better
restaurants, fashionable haunts, and specialised wine shops remain the established
distribution channels to a public of faithful connoisseurs.
