Le guide du Vin 2001
Michel Phaneuf |
Barbera d'Asti 1996, Stradivario:
**** Vin Excellent et Grappe d'Or 2001.
Dolcetto d'Asti 1998, Controvento:
**** Vin Excellent

PianoAlto 1996, Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOC :

Best Old World Red - Bava PianoAlto Barbera d'Asti Superiore 1996:
"The Bava family is well-known for producing wines that owe more to the vineyard they come form than to the wineries and wood in which they are aged.
The Cascina PianoAlto possesses 15 hectares (ha) of 30 to 60-year old Barbera vines in the village of Agliano d'Asti. This 1996 is their first
release from this property, acquired in 1994, a wine whose magnificent ruby colour leads to a rich, velvety-earthy fruit, powerful yet elegant, with
superb length. With as many Barbera styles as there are gorwers, PianoAlto will become a new classic". |

Alteserre 1996 Bava:
A big, big wine from the Monferrato region of northern Italy. Dont be fooled by the
gentle citrusy aromas. In the mouth, this packs a punch with a generous weight, texture
and richness. Ripe nectarine and peach fruit make the most noise, with good backing from
sweet-edged finely pitched oak. |

Alteserre
1996 Bava: Very much liked this pale but potent "world class Piedmontese
wine". Stacks of clean, herby fruit and a delectable spiciness. Grand, satisfying and
memorable. Note 13,5% alcohol.
Moscato dAsti 1997
Bava: Very softly moussey honeyed-but-dryish style to this effervescent (rather
than fizzy) Asti. Easy drinking, low alcohol (5,5%) and obvious quality. |

Arbest
Barbera dAsti 1994 Bava Rated 84 -:This Barbera was an attractive
reddy-brown colour.
Vanessa described the nose as lovely and soft with integrated spice, tar
and liquorice. Katrinas tasting note mentioned dried cinnamon and nutmeg
on the palate. Emmanuel found the wine to be very balanced, overall.
Cherry was equally enthusiastic: she smelt violets in the bouquet and found the palate to
be soft and creamy, with nice acidity and a good grip of ripening tannins.
WITH FOOD: The lamb garnished with an olive sauce and accompanied by risotto
had a strong Mediterranean influence, so it is not surprising that the star match of the
tasting went to the Italian Barbera and this dish. |

Barbera

Barolo
Breakdown Barolo 1990 Bava - rated 1st: The first of the 1990
vintages to be presented to the panel was the Bava Cocconato from Castiglione Falletto. It
was greeted with much enthusiasm. Bombana finally found his ideal balance in this wine,
and thought it had good ageing potential. He said approvingly: "If there is an
88 among these, I think this is it. Shek agreed: "It is ripe and very
pleasant." Lee said this was his favourite of seven wines on offer. "It is rich,
smooth and earthy", he said. Bradinini found that it improved with time, and Kwok
agreed it should be allowed to breathe. He added: "It is the most complex. It has a
little bit of astringency, and should go well with something fine, game and porcini
mushrooms for example." |

Moscato
