Langhe and Monferrato are known worldwide for the quality of their wines.
However, not only grapes benefit from the soil characteristics of these areas. Another precious treasure grows beneath the ground: the truffle.
Black and White Truffles in Piedmont
The black truffle “Tuber Aestivum” is widespread in Piedmont and is colloquially called Scorzone, because of its hard and rough black-brown skin with large pyramidal warts. As indicated by its name, it develops between June and August. Its aroma is delicate, with a robust flavour but not overly intense.
But with September’s arrival, lasting until January, the most prized truffle appears: the rare Tuber Magnatum Pico, known as the white truffle. It stands out with its lighter colour, smoother surface, and more robust and intense flavour, with sweet and spicy notes.
The Trifolau and Truffle Hunting
During truffle maturation, a particular figure quietly wanders between woods and clearings. It’s not a ghost: it’s the trifolau, an expert searching for the most prized tubers. By his side is the indispensable “tabui”, the truffle-hunting dog, with its highly developed and trained sense of smell, ready to locate the precious treasure.
During the truffle hunting season, also in our area, it is possible to take part in truffle hunting experiences and become a “trifolau for a day” to get close to this fascinating world.
The International Alba White Truffle Fair 2023
One of the most awaited events of the truffle season is the International Alba White Truffle Fair, now in its 93rd edition, with events spanning from October 7th to December 3rd.
Every Saturday and Sunday, in Alba, throughout the fair, there’s a global market where visitors can purchase the esteemed Alba white truffle, overseen and supported by the Quality Commission.
With dinners, cooking shows, cooking classes, markets, and cultural events, the truffle takes centre stage in numerous events that animate the town and surrounding area.
Other Truffle Fairs in Monferrato 2023
In addition to Alba, as every year, Monferrato also hosts truffle-themed fairs.
Traditionally, the Montiglio Monferrato Truffle Fair kicks off the season during the first two weekends of October.
The subsequent events include:
- The Moncalvo Truffle Fair 2023, on October 22nd and 29th.
- The White Truffle Festival in Valle Ghenza 2023, in Cella Monte, on November 4th and 5th.
- The National “Trifola d’Or” Truffle Fair in Murisengo 2023, on November 12th and 19th.
