Michele<\/strong>, also famous for having inspired Umberto Eco\u2019s celebrated novel The Name of the Rose.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this imposing monument is far from the only example: throughout Piedmont, countless churches and pievi have been beautifully preserved, offering the chance to discover and admire the allure of this artistic period\u2014perhaps less widely known than the later Gothic style, but just as rich in remarkable heritage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/pieve-romanica-montiglio-monferrato.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone Characteristics<\/h2>\n<p>Certain <strong>features are common and immediately recognizable<\/strong> in most Romanesque buildings, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>churches divided into bays with groin vaults,<\/li>\n<li>the creation of a matroneum (gallery) above the side aisles,<\/li>\n<li>exterior walls decorated with arches and small arcaded loggias,<\/li>\n<li>facades built either as a simple gable or with a stepped profile,<\/li>\n<li>round arches,<\/li>\n<li>thick walls that allow multiple rows of narrow openings, creating dim, semi-lit interiors intentionally left bare, without paintings or decorative embellishments,<\/li>\n<li>complex column forms, often piers composed of multiple semi-columns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, one of the elements that makes Piedmont\u2019s Romanesque churches and pievi especially distinctive is their variety.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/architettura-romanica-monferrato-piemonte.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" each area developed <strong>buildings with noticeably different characteristics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The Pievi of Monferrato Astigiano<\/h2>\n<p>In Monferrato, for example, churches and pievi were often built using pietra da cantoni, a marl that is particularly easy to work.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, buildings in this area are especially rich in decorations and ornamental details, made possible precisely by the malleability of this stone.<\/p>\n<p>Among the standout examples is the <strong>Abbazia di Vezzolano in Albugnano<\/strong>, one of the best-preserved Romanesque buildings in all Piedmont, <strong>just 15 km from Cantine Bava<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/abbazia-vezzolano-romanico-astigiano-piemonte.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" One example is the <strong>Pieve di San Lorenzo in Montiglio Monferrato<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also noteworthy is the <strong>Church of San Secondo in Cortazzone<\/strong>, whose interior features zoomorphic, anthropomorphic, fantastical, hybrid, and chimerical figures, an extraordinary testament to the extensive use of symbolism typical of the medieval period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Montechiaro d\u2019Asti, you\u2019ll find the Church of Saints Nazario and Celso<\/strong>, recognizable for its tall bell tower and the lively color effect created by alternating brick and sandstone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/Romanico-astigiano-chiesa-montechiaro-asti-piemonte.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/Romanico-astigiano-chiesa-montechiaro-asti-piemonte.jpg\" alt=\"chiesa romanica dei Santi Nazzario e Celso a Montechiaro d'Asti\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/Romanico-astigiano-chiesa-montechiaro-asti-piemonte.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/Romanico-astigiano-chiesa-montechiaro-asti-piemonte-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/Romanico-astigiano-chiesa-montechiaro-asti-piemonte-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/Romanico-astigiano-chiesa-montechiaro-asti-piemonte-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bava.com\/media\/Romanico-astigiano-chiesa-montechiaro-asti-piemonte-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>The Rete Romanica di Collina and the Cammino del Romanico: discovering Asti\u2019s Romanesque heritage<\/h2>\n<p>Today, the most important Romanesque sites in the Asti area are brought together in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gitefuoriportainpiemonte.it\/la-rete-romanica-di-collina-per-scoprire-i-tesori-del-medioevo-astigiano-tra-abbazie-e-chiese-romaniche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rete Romanica di Collina<\/a><\/strong>, a heritage project that includes 25 Romanesque churches across 22 municipalities in the province of Asti.<\/p>\n<p>On opening days, visitors can stamp the Carta Generale with the stamp of each church visited, with the goal of completing the full route. And for those who truly want to immerse themselves in the spirit of the era, it\u2019s possible to follow in the footsteps of pilgrims along the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vezzolano.it\/sentieri-tra-chiesa-e-chiesa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cammino del Romanico (Romanesque Trail)<\/a><\/strong>, which stops at some of the most significant Romanesque churches and pievi, including the beautiful Pieve della Madonna della Neve in Cocconato.<\/p>\n<h2>The Pieve of Cocconato: a Romanesque jewel in Asti\u2019s countryside<\/h2>\n<p>In Cocconato, on a hill surrounded by Bava vineyards, stands the <strong>Pieve della Madonna della Neve<\/strong>. From the 17th-century layout, the elegant barrel vaults with lunettes are still visible both in the nave (western area) and in the presbytery.<\/p>\n<p>The Pieve can be visited free of charge on the first Sunday of every month during the summer season.<\/p>\n<p>At its feet stretches the Barbera vineyard that gives life to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bava.com\/en\/vini\/stradivario-barbera-asti-superiore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stradivario<\/a><\/strong>, Bava\u2019s Barbera d\u2019Asti Superiore.
